Beijing hits back at Trump, to blacklist ‘unreliable’ foreign companies

The Chinese government will create its own blacklist of “unreliable” foreign companies, the Commerce Ministry announced on Friday, in the midst of commercial and technological rivalry with the United States. The announcement comes as the Chinese telecoms giant, Huawei, was placed in May by Washington on a list of suspicious companies to which American entities cannot sell technological equipment.

Huawei, which depends on American-made electronic chips to equip its mobile phones, is thus seriously affected in its very existence, according to experts. The measure announced by Beijing on Friday appears to be a response to the Trump administration’s offensive against Huawei.

“Foreign companies, organizations and individuals who do not obey the rules of the market, who deviate from the spirit of a contract, who impose embargoes or stop supplying Chinese companies for non-commercial reasons and harming seriously to their legitimate interests and rights will be placed on a list of unreliable entities, ”said Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng. This new measure is announced on the eve of the entry into force of new punitive tariffs in China on American products, almost a year after the start of trade hostilities unleashed by US President Donald Trump.
